SE/AK/SO Bay mare(Serr Serabaar X Gazella Bint Sabiah)"Ruby" is a lovely mare with a lot of substance, but not at the price of elegance. She is so large that I often have to do a double take to determine which is which of the bays with no white. She rivals our 1/2 Trakehner mare for substance and height, but is hands down better in type.Ruby is on lease from her owner, so one of these days will be returning, in foal to either Habib Rafiq, or Sean Daaim CH. Due to this fact, we are not offering her foal in utero.

She is rather warmbloody in type and will produce top notch eventing, jumping and dressage horses. Although, typical of these lines, I wouldn't rule out endurance and Sport Horse in Hand!From the first pictures I saw of Rosie I began picturing her babies with Habib Rafiq. Stardust Sparkle

(Habib Rafiq X JB Gentleluv - GG Jabask daughter) 2005 Chestnut Egyptian sired mare.Sparkle is gorgeous. Just no other way to put it. She is big bodied with a very classy, well shaped neck with good length. Sparkle has a head that says Arabian load and clear. Her legs are very correct and she is a very well balance mare. Her back is short and strong, her heart girth is deep. Her ribs are well sprung and her hindquarter is powerful.She is seasonally liver chestnut/ bright chestnut and usually has a metallic sheen to her coat, just like her full brother and her sire. She does carry rabicano markings, but they don't show up on photos.She is back from the trainer's and is well started under saddle. Sparkle is a "nice, quiet ride", but with get up and go when you want it. Next spring she will be bred to Sean Daaim CH.Having sold both of her full brothers, we are retaining Sparkle at this time.

With the internet and TV playing to our hearts with seizures and adoptions being common place, where is the common sense knowledge of how, exactly we should bring a horse back from malnutrition? And what constitutes abuse, neglect?Here is UC Davis's take on the subject:http://www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/vetext/animalwelfare/equine/managingEquineNeglect.0404.pdf But how do you really know where your horse falls and how to bring them back? Careful use of the Heineke cart will give you a start, but remember that some breeds are naturally "ribbier" than others. A Thoroughbred ready for a race isn't going to have as much fat over their ribs as a Quarter Horse fitted for the halter ring. Use caution when evaluating the condition of your horses. You don't want to take an average horse and feed them as if they were a 2 and they're really a 4 because they are going to lose weight. It's that simple.The UC davis protocol is designed for a horse that is not being fed grain. It's not designed for a situation where the horses were used to being fed grain already (even if it wasn't enough by show horse standards). If your horse is getting any grain now, the UC Davis protocol, used as written will make them lose weight, not gain. Here's the problem, highlighted in red below:Sample Feeding Protocol- The following protocol has been used in experimental studies and is calculated for a starved horse with a normal body weight of 880 lb (400 kg) and a daily D.E. requirement of 13.4 Mcal per day. Alfalfa hay with a D.E. of 2.28 Mcal/kg and 21% crude protein as determined by chemical analysis is used as the forage in the following protocol:· Days 1 to 3: Feed 50% of the digestible energy (D.E.) requirement in 6 feedings with four hour intervals.o Feed 1.1 lb (0.5 kg) of leafy alfalfa every 4 hours (6 feedings per day)· Days 4 to 5: Feed 75% of D.E. requirement in 6 feedings every 4 hours (6 feedings per day).o Feed approximately 1.6 lb or 0.75 kg of alfalfa per feeding.· Days 6 to 10: Feed 100% of the D.E. requirement in 3 feedings every 8 hours (3 feedings per day).o Feed approximately 4.3 lb or 2.0 kg alfalfa per feeding.· Days 10 to 120: Continue feeding 2 to 3 times per day, increasing quantity if consumed. It is recommended not to feed grain until body condition score of 3 or higher is achieved, usually after 2 months of refeeding the emaciated horse.So, for the first 60 days they feed nothing but alfalfa hay. But what if your area doesn't normally feed alfalfa? Feeding alfalfa alone to a horse that has never had it in their life will give them a major case of the runs (diarrhea). This will cause immediate and possibly life threatening weight loss. If you start off with the UC Davis protocol, assuming an emaciated condition and the horse is not emaciated, then you will be massively underfeeding the horse. It would be like saying that you should require 2,000 calories a day for your height, but because you're thin we're going to start you on 1,000 calories a day for 3 days. Then up you to 1,500 calories a day for the next 2 days. That's fine if you really only need 900 calories to sustain your weight. You'll start gaining right away. However, if someone miscalculated and you start with a need for 1,500 calories a day, then you will immediately lose weight and quickly. Dietting 101. Anyone who's tried to diet by counting calories probably knows this.If the horse/s you are refeeding have been getting grain and free choice of round bale hay, then they should NOT be put on a highly limited alfalfa only diet.. What you should do is feed free choice of grass hay, like they were used to and small amounts of a pelleted grain. This is what I do. I have done many horses this way and it works great. I will feed horses up to 6 times a day, 1/2 -1 lb at a time to start and up to 2 lbs at a time if it's a mare with a foal. That's up to 12 lbs a day, which is actually quite a lot of grain for an average Arabian. Key thing here is small amounts because a horse's stomach is so small. I also add black oil sunflower seed to the diet in small quantities. These are high in protein (including the amino acid lysine, which is sometimes lacking) and fat. They put weight on very quickly! BTW, horses digest fat very well and most of them like the sunflower seeds. Additionally, they are much easier to feed than pouring corn oil over the grain, which is messy and some horses won't eat it. The fat and protein ensure that the horse maintains existing muscle mass.I also use Chaffhaye Alfalfa, which is fresh chopped allfalfa with probiotics added, sealed up airtight into a plastic bag, so it doesn't need to be kept in a barn. Since this is a moist feed, it also helps maintain hydration levels. I usually start with small amounts several times a day, just like the grain, watching carefully for loose stools. There are other problems with the UC Davis diet such as quality of hay, actual weight of hay fed, vs. just feeding "a flake", which is quite common as a measurement method and very error prone. Also, if the protein content of the diet is insufficient, or is incomplete in amino acids, the body will start breaking down muscle to keep going. The really bad part of that is that the body doesn't really care that much where it takes the protein from. What you normally see is a wasting of muscle mass from the major muscle groups, but the body can also take from vital organs as well. If it does that, then death can come quickly from organ failure. That's why it's so important to ensure adequate quantity and quality of protein in the diet. This is why we use Chaffhaye. The quality of the hay is premium. The horses not only look better quickly, but also start to use their other feed sources better. Average keepers become easy keepers!One more thought on refeeding. There are many deficiencies that horses and humans can have. Consult with your veterinarian about any supplements that might be advisable. Vitamin B complex is a good mixture for injection by your veterinarian. Another for older horses is Iron. There are many more, but you get the point. A balanced ration may not be enough for a horse that is clinically deficient, or so poor they cannot absorb the vitamins and minerals they need to rebuild.Good luck with your refeeding project!!Karen

It's been said that the value of a horse is a combination of two factors: 1) How much the buyer is willing to pay. 2) How much the seller must have to part with the horse.Once upon a time, foal prices started out at a certain level and then went up with training and experience. In today's market the old rules are not as valid as they used to be, though. How many people are buying young stock and raising them up over the years to put under saddle, breed, etc?My current philosophy on pricing is that foals belong at my place, unless the prospective owner has the reputation, backed up by years of experience, of taking horses from birth through riding and beyond. Therefore, I price my babies at "top dollar". My hope is that this will increase the chances that my foals will wind up in good, using homes, thus decreasing the likelihood that they will wind up at a low end auction or slaughter house.Once they are put under saddle, I evaluate performance potential and price them accordingly. Many of my geldings are "nice, quiet riding horses" and I price them for the trail riding market. They are much happier doing that with a rider they can bond with than in a show string where they get worked for 30 minutes a day.Speaking of geldings, I am a big believer in gelding 99% of all colts. If you are interested in a colt, please speak up before I have that surgery done! It's irreversible after all.Unless the price is "firm", feel free to offer less, or a trade, or partial trade for another horse, hay or other horse items.
